When umbrellas, lampposts and clouds were young
we used to eat flyblown windowpanes
and drink water from shapeless puddles. Arachnid
hieroglyphs and equine breath disgusted the universe.
Knives melted in the air like the tongues of sacrificial victims,
exuberant and forgiving.
