dead coyote

It’s the winos of mountain lakes that stick their faces to the sky.
Evenings and mornings share the fear of water, and birds
grow old while sleeping. Flowers are lost in the fields,
bereft of the past in the vases. Towns
burn, towns freeze. Children cut the moon in turn
with scissors found in the dusty heart of a dead coyote.
